10.7: Automator Services for multi-language speech

OS X Lion now has many different languages available to install in your speech preferences. This is something I've wanted for a long time, because I have long aspired to learn Korean and Japanese. Being able to easily hear things spoken in those languages would really help out.

The problem is that Lion will only speak selected text using the voice that you set as default. I have Alex set as default and when I try to have it speak text using the built-in context menu item, it does nothing.

There is a way around this by using Automator.

First you need to go into the Speech preferences and install any languages that you want to use. Next, open up Automator and make a new Service that receives the selected text in any application. Then add the 'Speak Text' action to the workflow and choose the voice that you want. Finally, save the service with a name that tells you what language it c ...

10.6: Set Printer Presets from the Terminal

If you want to set the printer preset from the terminal in 10.6 (or from an AppleScript via a 'do shell script' command), it's different than how it's done in previous versions of OS X.

Assuming you have a printer called 'Copy Room Printer' and a preset called 'double-sided, stapled,' you would run the following two commands:
 defaults write com.apple.print.custompresets.forprinter.Copy_Room_Printer com.apple.print.lastPresetPref 'double-sided, stapled' defaults write com.apple.print.custompresets.forprinter.Copy_Room_Printer com.apple.print.lastPresetPrefType 3
Just set the parameters to match your own needs.

[crarko adds: I haven't tested this one. If this works in Lion or you find an equivalent, please post it in the comments.]

Google in 'good position' on Android, hints Moto Google TV

Google during the call for its buyout of Motorola hinted that it was confident about its ability to defend Android against patent complaints. The company declined to talk about its exact strategy but said it was now in a "very good position" to protect the entire ecosystem. The $12.5 billion deal gives it access to 17,000 existing and 7,500 in-progress patents, giving it more clout than if it had bought the collective Novell and Nortel patents....
