iPhone 5 appears temporarily on Cincinnati Bell website (Updated)

TUAW reader Cory L. sent us an image today that he had captured from his web browser while perusing the i-Wireless prepaid cell phone section of the Cincinnati Bell website. The screenshot shows a placeholder for an iPhone 5 with no image and no "Add to basket" purchase button.

A quick look at the site now shows that the placeholder has been removed. There are some fascinating things about this -- first, Cincinnati Bell is a regional carrier in the US, not a major carrier like AT&T or Verizon. Second, the website is for a pay-as-you-go program. Finally, the specs that are listed for the phone show an 8MP camera, 4G speeds (Cory notes that Cincinnati Bell's network uses HSPA+), and a 4" screen. Those specifications align with most of the previous rumors that we've heard about the device.

Whether or not this all means something will be determined on Tuesday, when Apple will hold its iPhone event in Cupertino. Be sure to join us on Tuesday beginning at 1 PM EDT / 10 AM PDT for our liveblog of the event.

Update: Another reader, Randy K., sent in another screenshot from the same site. This one shows a low-cost iPhone 4S device with different specifications than the rather expensive iPhone 5 shown above.

Update 2: A different website is claiming that only the iPhone 4s will be announced, based on strings that were allegedly found in a pre-release beta of iTunes. A source close to TUAW revealed that no such text strings were found in any of the recent beta releases of iTunes.

While we're excited about the screenshots shown here, it should be noted that as with all information that appears ahead of a new product announcement, they should be not be considered as reality until such announcements are actually made ... or not.

AT&T Begins Warning High-Volume Data Users of Upcoming Throttling

In late July, AT&T announced that as of October 1st it would begin throttling data speeds for customers on unlimited data plans who registered in the top 5% of heaviest data users. While AT&T no longer offers unlimited data plans, customers who had signed up for such plans prior to their discontinuation, including many iPhone users, have been grandfathered in and allowed to keep their unlimited plans.


Reddit user "TheReverendZ" yesterday reported (via 9to5Mac) that he had received a text message from AT&T warning him that he had fallen into that top 5% group and encouraging him to use Wi-Fi to help avoid throttling of his data speeds. TheReverendZ notes that he typically uses 10-12 GB of data per month, as he does not have home Internet service, while "skelatwork" reports that he received a similar notice when he had passed approximately 11 GB of data for the month.

AT&T has noted that it will provide multiple warnings and a grace period before beginning to throttle data speeds, and it now appears that the carrier has begun the warning process. Customers subject to throttling will retain access to unlimited data but will see their speeds reduced until the start of the next billing cycle.

10.7: Exit TextEdit quickly without Save prompt

If you use TextEdit as a scratchpad for typing in notes, and frequently close it without saving them, you wish to avoid Lion's longer wait to open a save dialog (which you don't always want) than the previous 'Do you want to save?' dialog.


While even an empty document (you typed something, then deleted it) will prompt for saving, a document with no undo history won't. I've found it's quicker on my system to use Command+Z to undo everything I've typed, then Command+W to close the window, than Command+W to close followed by a wait until I can dismiss the save dialog.

[crarko adds: That Save dialog does take a unusually long time to pop up. I'll make a guess this is because the system is doing its housekeeping for Autosave and Versions. Anyway, the method in the hint was definitely quicker when I tried it.]

Apple's 'N94' iPhone 4S Appears in Inventory Database

Yesterday, word surfaced that entries for revised iPhone 4 models had appeared in Apple's inventory database, but at the time there was no sign of new iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 models.

9to5Mac now reports that entries for an iPhone identified as "N94" have indeed appeared in the database, courtesy of reliable source "Mr. X". The N94 iPhone has been the subject of numerous parts leaks that have revealed it to be iPhone 4-like in appearance, with the device having been rumored to be called the iPhone 4S.

With one of higher-end models of the N94 iPhone listed in the database with a model number of MD234, the developments may lend credence to a leaked photo of what was claimed to be a label for the white 16 GB iPhone 4S. That label, which surfaced on a Chinese forum yesterday, refers to the lower-end device as model number MD239.


That label, presuming it is genuine, also makes reference to both IMEI and MEID numbers, which would indicate that the device is indeed a world-mode phone capable of operating on GSM (IMEI number) and CDMA (MEID number) networks.

There continues to be no sign of the rumored redesigned iPhone 5 that has been the subject of much discussion since case designs based on a leaked design document began appearing several months ago.

Mr. X also indicates that Apple's iPod touch line may be seeing some price drops next week, at least in international markets. It is unknown exactly what price points the iPod touch will come in at in the United States, as it is unclear how much of the international price adjustment is due to currency fluctuation and how much might be due to an actual price cut.

The report suggests, however, that the entry-level 8 GB iPod touch could come in at $199 or below, down from its current $229 price point. The iPod touch is expected to see only very minor updates next week, with the addition of white models, improved ambient light sensors, and oleophobic coatings for the displays being the primary changes.

'Welcome to iCloud' emails sent out prematurely

Between the upcoming media event on October 4 and recent downtime on MobileMe, it's looking likely that iCloud's public launch is coming soon. An email sent to an AppleInsider reader, reprinted below, adds yet more evidence for an imminent debut of iCloud.

Welcome to iCloud. The Apple ID for your iCloud account is [redacted] and it's what you'll use to get your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and PC set up. Just follow these instructions and you'll be up and running in no time.

Once iCloud is set up, it stores your content and wirelessly pushes it to all your devices. For example, buy a song with iTunes on your computer, and it will appear on your iPod touch and iPad. When you snap a photo on your iPhone it will automatically be sent to your iPad. You can start creating a Pages document on your iPhone, and put the finishing touches on it from your iPad. There's no need to dock or sync to your computer. With iCloud, it just works.

AppleInsider obviously feels the email is legitimate, though it was apparently leaked early since the setup instructions page is not yet live on Apple's site.

iCloud replaces Apple's existing MobileMe services and is free to all users. Apple has given no firm release date for the service other than "fall," but according to feedback we've heard from developers the service appears ready for launch should Apple decide to publicly debut it at the October 4 event.

10.7: Completely disable Resume

This hint describes a way to completely, once and for all, disable all Resume features (that is, 'Reopen windows when logging back in' and Saved Application States) once and for all.


Disable Saved Application States

OS X Lion offers a checkbox to disable saved application states. However, many applications do not seem to care about that checkbox (e.g. Terminal). The easiest way to prevent applications from writing away saved states is exactly that: don't let them write to the saved application states folder.

To do this, first open up Terminal. Issue the following command to remove any saved application states you might have:

rm -r '~/Library/Saved Application State/*'

Now, prevent anything from writing it's state away ever again:

chmod -R a-w '~/Library/Saved Application State'

You may use the chmod command on individual application's folders inside the Saved Application State folder to preven ...
