YouTube movie service may be unlimited, hit UK first

Google's YouTube movie service plans may intentionally avoid the fierce competition in the US if a purported leak on Friday is real. The company would roll out the service in the UK and Europe as a whole, only moving to the US later. The system illustrated by the New York Post would follow a subscription method and would have to compete with Netflix and the new Amazon Prime service....

Apple files for trademark on 'Places' social networking

Apple has filed a trademark application with the European Union (based on an earlier filing in Jamaica) to protect the name "Places" as a social networking service that may offer the ability to find friends via GPS. The application, filed yesterday, is categorized under for very broad classes covering almost every technology-related activity one could think of, but particularly lists the name as being used for "online social networking services."...

iOS Text selection tips

Yesterday I found some shortcuts to text selection while using the notes application in the iPhone (iOS 4.2.1).

If you make a two fingers swipe on a paragraph, it is selected (the easiest way I've found is to make a swipe down just on the paragraph).

In the same way, if you pinch out (like when zooming in a photo) a wider selection is automatically started and you have 'control' over both the beginning and the end of the selection.

[crarko adds: I still find text editing in iOS to be something of a black art. It's the main reason I have not attempted to edit this site using my iPad. It's still just too inefficient compared to doing it on the Mac, even if that means bringing the Mac along when I travel.]

Intel: Apple has year-long headstart on Thunderbolt

Intel at its Thunderbolt preview event in San Francisco on Thursday said that Apple effectively had the technology to itself for the next year. The 10Gbps spec wasn't exclusive to Apple, but the semiconductor firm didn't expect other computer builders to have it until early 2012. It was up to them to decide when to leap in, Intel said....

Sketchy rumors: timely iPad 2 doubtful, 2012 MacBook Pro big

A handful of sources floated rumors on Wednesday casting doubt on the likelihood of a major iPad update at Apple's March 2 event. The 'reliable' sources suggested that Apple was indeed having production problems and that Apple might feel compelled to release a stopgap device, portrayed as an iPad "1.5." If a full sequel is due, Apple might not have enough stock and might not ship it en masse until June, iLounge was told....
