Pulse News pushes out a significant update for iPhone news junkies

Pulse has been a major player in the news aggregation world, garnering good reviews from TUAW and users. Pulse has released version 2.0 for the iPhone and a good program has become even better.

Here's a quick summary of the improvements:

  • Triple the news sources
  • A personalization option
  • Improved speed. The better performance was immediately obvious when I used it
  • Better search that now includes most popular news feeds

This release in general brings Pulse up to the standard of the iPad release. The update now requires iOS 4.0 or above.

I check Pulse several times a day and find it very useful. I'm also loving Zite, which I reviewed last week. Zite is iPad-only, but it is a great way to quickly see what is happening in your areas of interest. On the iPad, I use both apps and get the best of both. Zite is better for discovery of news and information, Pulse News is more restricted to what you tell it you want, but in this latest iPhone release Pulse is moving toward a discovery model as well. Try them both. They are free and I think you'll really like the results you get.

iPad 2 international lines now in full swing

The retail launch of the iPad 2 in countries around the world is fast approaching (or already underway, depending on where you are), and lines are in full swing. For those keeping track, the iPad 2 will launch today, March 25, in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK at 5 PM local time.

Similar to the US launch, the international lines for the iPad 2 are long, with many folks reporting hundreds of people in line. According to Rob Edwards, one Sydney store reportedly has 400-500 people waiting for an iPad 2. Germany is also reporting long lines with nearly 800 people lined up in Munich and Oberhausen. We have canvassed our readers and scoured Twitter to give you glimpse of the excitement. Check out our gallery below to see what is happening across the globe. We will update our gallery with fresh images as the rollout begins in Europe, Canada and Mexico.

TUAW's Daily App: Max and the Magic Marker

Max and the Magic Marker is a really incredible game. It's won awards everywhere, and now it's available from EA on iOS for iPhone and iPad. Essentially, the game is a platformer with Max having to navigate the weird game world by moving and jumping around. But the twist is he also has a magic marker that can be used to draw real-world objects that he can physically interact with. When you combine Max's platforming with the physics-based items created by the Magic Marker, things can get pretty wild.

It's a lot of fun, and the puzzles included in the game are limited only by your creativity. Max and the Magic Marker originally came out on Nintendo's WiiWare platform, but it's available on iOS now with full Retina Display support across all 58 levels. There's no Game Center integration, which is a disappointment, especially from EA, but considering that it's basically a solo affair, it's not a deal breaker. Max and the Magic Marker is US$1.99 on the iPhone (and note that it only works with the 3GS and up) or $4.99 on the iPad.

Change Safari's User Agent to Google Chrome

Google Maps sometimes will take an interminably long time to load in Safari. I have found that changing Safari's User Agent to Google Chrome consistently fixes this problem, resulting in snappy loading of Google Map web pages.

Changing the User Agent is a cumbersome process, involving making sure the Develop menu is visible in Safari's menu bar, retrieving Google Chrome's User Agent string from the Internet or a saved file, and then entering the string in the User Agent dialog window.

This hint covers how to use AppleScript to simplify this. The following AppleScript automates this process. Copy and paste the code into AppleScript Editor and save the script either as an application or to ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Safari and run it from the Scripts menu.

Apple receives American Brand Excellence Awards

To our readers, it's not surprising that Apple keeps receiving awards for its products. Now the company has won the eighth annual American Brand Excellence Award as the company that best meets the needs of small to mid-sized businesses. Apple also won the award in the Technology category.

The awards are given annually by The Business Journals, a collection of 41 local / regional business newspapers owned by American City Business Journals, Inc. The newspapers asked more than 2,000 owners of small to medium businesses to rate over 250 brands based on criteria such as "behaves ethically," "forward thinking" and "good price for what you get." Spokesperson Godfrey Phillips of The Business Journals noted that their research indicated that just one year after the initial release of the iPad, over 9 percent of business owners are using the device in their businesses.

Apple is in good company with other American Brand Excellence Award winners, including Visa in the Financial / Insurance category, Southwest Airlines in the Travel category and UPS for Business Services.

MacTech Conference 2011 announced for November

mactech conference 2011MacTech Conference 2011 has been announced for November 2-4, 2011 in Los Angeles. Registration is now open with a limited number of early bird slots available. The event will again be at the Sheraton, which sold out some nights last year. We visited MacTech Conference in 2010 and were thoroughly impressed. The efficiency of the event, plus the depth of content for Mac IT folks or developers (there are two tracks) makes it worth the cost. Check out last year's lineup here.

The conference lasts three days, with events during the day and the night. There are lots of opportunities for people to meet, learn from each other and discuss what was seen each day. MacTech acquired NSConference US and has a new Developer Sessions Chair, Steve "Scotty" Scott. Check out Scotty in action on iDeveloper.tv -- he knows what he's talking about! This also means expanded developer sessions from last year. MacTech Magazine is well-known to IT folks, and those sessions will no doubt be stellar again this year.

Pricing for MacTech is $999 for three days, meals included, a MacTech Magazine subscription and sessions, plus all the evening entertainment. Early bird registration knocks that down to $799. There are a limited number of scholarships available as well, and you can find out more here.

We'll be there again this year and report from the conference. Hope to see you at MacTech Conference 2011!

TUAW is a media sponsor of MacTech Conference 2011.
